He is well known for his outstanding poculiform elwesii-selections.<br \/>Galanthus \u2018Zon Bear\u2019 is a seedling found in the garden of Calvor Mateer, which is full of poculiform snowdrops. There are hundreds if not thousands of them. Calvor Mateer constantly digs out the ordinary ones and divides the clumps as they grow.<br \/>The original plants can be traced back to the so-called remittance men. They were dissolute or drunken characters who were either hopeless alcoholics, gay, gamblers or womanizers that embarrassed the family. They were set up on farms around Victoria but mainly north of the city.
