Galanthus elwesii 'Zon Bear'
Galanthus 'Zon Bear' is a poculiform snowdrop that was found by Canadian snowdrop enthusiast Calvor Mateer from Victoria, British Columbia. He is well known for his outstanding poculiform elwesii-selections.
Galanthus 'Zon Bear' is a seedling found in the garden of Calvor Mateer, which is full of poculiform snowdrops. There are hundreds if not thousands of them. Calvor Mateer constantly digs out the ordinary ones and divides the clumps as they grow.
The original plants can be traced back to the so-called remittance men. They were dissolute or drunken characters who were either hopeless alcoholics, gay, gamblers or womanizers that embarrassed the family. They were set up on farms around Victoria but mainly north of the city. All around their old farm houses they planted snowdrops as they reminded them of their former home.
Calvor Mateer checks many of those old farmsteads and the naturalized colonies of Galanthus elwesii that developed in the nearby woods over the time.
