Galanthus elwesii ‘Emerald Bear’

Galanthus ‘Emerald Bear’ is a semi-poculiform snowdrop that was found by Canadian snowdrop enthusiast Calvor Mateer from Victoria, British Columbia. He is well known for his outstanding poculiform elwesii-selections.
Galanthus ‘Emerald Bear’ is one of hundreds of different poculiform or semi-poculiform Galanthus elwesii that developed in the garden of Calvor Mateer. Calvor Mateer constantly digs out the ordinary ones and divides the clumps as they grow. The bees do the rest.
Die ursprünglichen Pflanzen können bis auf die sogenannten "Remittance Men" zurückverfolgt werden. Die Männer waren gewissermassen die "schwarzen Schafe" aus britischen Familien während der Kolonialzeit. Mit einer Familienrente wurden sie nach Kanada geschickt und somit zu einem Leben fernab von Grossbritannien verdammt. Rund um ihre Farmen pflanzten sie Schneeglöckchen, die sie an ihre frühere Heimat Großbritannien erinnerten.
Calvor Mateer checks many of those old farmsteads and the naturalized colonies of Galanthus elwesii that developed in the nearby woods over the time.
Galanthus ‘Emerald Bear’ is a very special snowdrop, because the inner marks and the shape of the inner petals are unique among all Galanthus elwesii cultivars known to date.
