'Castle Green Dragon'

Galanthus plicatus ‘Castle Green Dragon’

Galanthus ‘Castle Green Dragon’ is an attractive, virescent snowdrop from Scotland. The seedling was found by the Scottish snowdrop collector Ian Christie at Brechin Castle in Angus and was tentatively named as ‘Anne’s Green Stripe’. The variety was later renamed ‘Castle Green Dragon’ at the request of the Dalhousies. Brechin Castel is the home of the Earl of Dalhousie, the clan chieftain of Clan Maule of Panmure in Angus, and Clan Ramsay of Dalhousie since the beginning of the 20th century. The castle has been the seat of the Clan Maule since medieval times and the green dragon on the crest of Clan Maule is the reason why the name ‘Castle Green Dragon’ was chosen for this snowdrop.
The use of two variety names for one plant has created some confusion among collectors and and even in literature. Today the name ‘Castle Green Dragon’ is used and ‘Anne’s Green Stripe’ is only to be regarded as a synonym.
The plant itself is considered difficult to cultivate and only very few bulbs are available at specialized nurseries. For this reason, the variety is not recommended for beginners and should only be cultivated by experienced collectors.
