‘Ilse Bilse’

Galanthus hybr. ‘Ilse Bilse’

Galanthus ‘Ilse Bilse’ comes from the garden of the German snowdrop expert Hagen Engelmann. Like some other "color changers", it was found in his Garden in Cottbus, a city in the east of Germany. The variety has small flowers with initially pure green markings. With advancing age, this hybrid transforms from an inconspicuous snowdrop into a little princess with yellow inner markings and an attractive teardrop shape.
Like the other "color changers", 'Ilse Bilse' is a Galanthus plicatus hybrid, probably paired with Galanthus gracilis genes. However, the influence of Galanthus elwesii and Galanthus nivalis cannot be excluded.
The first feedback on the variety from other snowdrop collectors was rather disappointing, as the color does not show up at first. Rather, the variety needs some time to unfold to its full glory. The term "color changer" was born and helped a whole group of new varieties to become better known.
